OUR FAVORITE CROWD PLEASER, MR. MODERN!!    06/21/2011
Antique Shows Flea Market
One of the original hot rock n' roll dealers from San Francisco, Mr. Modern has been a staple at Randolph Street since the earliest show in 2004. Like Mary Poppin's carpet bag, Mr. Modern has virtually everything imaginable popping out of their big truck. Hot mid century furnishings, slick glassware, art and ephemera and full on estates packed with record albums, glassware, old keys, textiles - if no other vendor were to show up, Mr. Modern would still have something for everyone!

WE LOVE BOOKS AND BOOKDEALER MATT MEYER OF THIS OLD BOOK!   06/19/2011
Antique Shows Flea Market
The RSM crowd seems to enjoy browsing through my old books.  The books are sorted by subject, they’re all in great condition, and very reasonable priced.  Many times the shoppers are surprised at just how affordable old books can be.  Books from the 1800’s are sometimes priced as low as $5.  I would say my average book sells for in the $8 range although I do stock some old and rare books that can be priced at $50 or more.

ANTIQUE TRADER INTERVIEWS SALLY SCHWARTZ
ANTIQUE TRADER INTERVIEWS SALLY SCHWARTZ    06/17/2011
Antique Shows Flea Market
Antiques show promoters have to roll with the punches. Besides having to work with hundreds of exhibitors they also have to make an event smooth and enjoyable for thousands of attendees. Hold your event outside and all bets are off.

In spite of all her staff's best efforts and simply put, an amazing array of the best vintage wares around, Mother Nature certainly rained on promoter Sally Schwartz's May Randolph Street Market show opening in Chicago. This season opener is a big deal - the coolest merch is found here offered by the coolest sellers this side of a May Brimfield.

So Sally and her intrepid crew are gearing up for the June 25-26 market with the theme of "June is the new May!" The show is held in monthly May through September at 1340 W. Randolph Street, Chicago.

Antique Trader chatted with Sally and learned how to kick summertime weather setbacks in the kebabs and come out planning another great show.....

Chaise Lounge made by Alex Porbe of Incite Design, Michigan -- this fabulous, sleek piece is made from toilet tank ball valves, recycled car tires and steel. It's priced at $2,200.00 and is a one-of-a kind piece. Completely reminiscent of Le Corbusier, coming to Chicago for the very first time. A perfect addition to Plumbers Hall lineup of fabulous designs and finds!

HARRY RINKER REVIEWS RANDOLPH STREET MARKET
HARRY RINKER REVIEWS RANDOLPH STREET MARKET   06/15/2011
Antique Shows Flea Market
After attending Chicago’s Randolph Street Market, I left feeling the future of the antiques and collectibles business is in good hands. The show was filled with young people, couples, and families. It has been over 10 years since I experienced this level of buzz at a show. Where has a show like this been? How did I miss hearing about it?

The show has something for everyone and everyone’s pocket. Although Modernism, outsider art, and crafts dominate, the antiques sector is well represented. My first impression from walking the show was how affordable everything is priced. The dealers come to sell and sell they do.

I have been preaching for years that today’s dealers need to give buyers what they want and not what they think they want. The Randolph Street Market does this. Sellers have material that matches current hot decorator looks and fashion styles. Vintage clothing and accessory dealers provide plenty of brand name merchandise.

PAINTER MARTIN WILLIS
PAINTER MARTIN WILLIS    06/01/2011
Antique Shows Flea Market
We are so excited to have Martin Willis from San Francisco, driving all the way to Chicago to showcase his wonderful paintings! According to Martin, who started the Antique & Auction Podcast and knows and sells a great deal of expensive art, the pieces he is showcasing at Randolph Street Market are from his "twisted imagination". He can't stop painting, "plein air" to abstract, you'll see and be able to buy scenes from the Pacific coastline to Van Gogh-ish pastorals to cubist gems. Can't wait to see and be seduced by Martin's paintings!

From Larry O'Connell, producer of the area's best vinyl shows and big man in our Vinyl Swap Meet tent....CHECK OUT this fantastic "party in a box" music player! Imagine those whimsical, carefree days when people could enjoy vinyl without the benefit of electricity, wherever their wanderings would take them. Such movie images of fun and frolic with a wind-up Victrola include Meryl Streep and Robert Redford on safari in Out of Africa and Liza Minnelli in Cabaret. Just wind this baby up, break out the tartan blanket, caviar, crystal glasses, champagne and PARTY!! Here's what Larry has to say about this sensational relic: "A relative of mine asked to sell this QRS suitcase windup functional phonograph. It has it's own supply of steel needles and sounds great. Has storage for a few 10" records and needle bin. Asking $150 The wind up is the center/front hole with a crank handle enclosed."
